Idioms

What is an idiom? An idiom is a word or phrase that has a different meaning than its definition.
Analyzing the separate meanings of a word or phrase one would not be able to determine the definition of the sentence.
A
A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand
This idiom is used by Abraham Lincoln, in 1858, to mean that a group of people must come together and function as one or the group of people will disband.
Example
Abraham Lincoln states, "A house divided upon itself and upon that foundation do our enemies build their hopes of subduing us."
Real Meaning: If the country cannot unify on the issue of slaves and free states then it gives America's enemies oppertunities to strike at us.

A Doubting Thomas
Refering back to biblical times, when the Apostile Thomas questioned Jesus. A Doubting Thomas is one who shows sketpicism.
Example
I think the oven should be set at 360 degree's. That will burn the cake! No it will not, do not be A Doubting Thomas.
Real Meaning: The skepticism of the person who thinks the oven should be at a lower temperature, leaves room for the baker to call him A Doubting Thomas.

All in the Same Boat
Everyone is in the same situation.
Example
Luke, now that we're in the operating room, we are all in the same boat.
Real Meaning: The doctors all agree that the patient needs operated on.

As High As A Kite
Any object that is much higher than the ground.
Example
Daddy: That tower is as high as a kite.
Real Meaning: The tower is much higher than us.

Keep an Eye on Him
This does not mean to physically place an eye on the person. Rather it infers to tell someone to watch another person, closely.
Example
Bob said, Peter, "keep an eye on him, I don't trust him."
Real Meaning: Bob wants Peter to be careful around him, and watch what this person does.

Knock On Wood
To tap or beat on wood for good luck or to avoid bad luck.
Example
Before an exam Matt said, "knock on wood, I'll get an A."
Real Meaning: Matt wants an A on his exam.

Kick the Bucket
From the separate meanings of kick and bucket, one would not be able to determine the definition of the phrase kick the bucket. Kick the bucket is a colloquial phrase meaning, die.
Example
George kicked the bucket.
Real Meaning: George died.
